Cathryn A. Galanter, MD is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and the Training Director of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship Program.

She completed her undergraduate degree in Art History and graduated with distinction in her major from the University of Pennsylvania. She obtained her medical degree from New York University School of Medicine and did her general and child psychiatric residencies and research fellowship at Columbia.

She completed an NIMH career development award, Improving Child Psychiatrists’ Clinical Decision Making, where she applied methods of studying clinical problem solving to understanding how child and adolescent psychiatrists diagnoses and differentiate pediatric bipolar disorder and ADHD. After completing her K-Award, she remained at Columbia as the Director of the Pediatric Bipolar Service at Children’s Hospital of New York and the Clarice Kestenbaum Fellow for Training and Education.

She came to SUNY Downstate and Kings County Hospital Center in 2011 as Training Director for the Child Psychiatry Fellowship. Her clinical and research interests include: 1) improving education in children’s mental health using theory based interventions for trainees, psychiatrists, and primary care practitioners, 2) understanding clinician decision making, 3) evidence based assessment and treatment of pediatric bipolar disorder and 4) the overlap between ADHD and bipolar disorder.

Dr. Galanter has been the recipient of grants and awards from the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, the American Psychiatric Association, Columbia University and the National Institute of Mental Health. She has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and co-edited The DSM-IV-TR Casebook and Treatment Guide for Child Mental Health. She is active in the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and the American Psychiatry Association. She has a private practice in Brooklyn treating children, adolescents and adults.

Interesting Fact: Elena has mild face blindness (prosopagnosia: she struggles to recognize familiar faces). This has gotten her into some embarrassing & funny situations.

After completing his Psychiatry residency training, Dr. Amsel completed research fellowships at Columbia University in Mental Health Statistics and in Child Psychiatry Research.  He also joined the faculty of Columbia University in 1992 as a clinical and research psychiatrist, where he worked on suicide risk factors. After 9/11, Dr. Amsel joined the Trauma Studies and Services (TSS) Division at the New York Psychiatric Institute, as the Co-Director for Dissemination. Later he joined the Global Psychiatric Epidemiology Group (GPEG) at Columbia studying the effects of childhood stress, such as 9/11 exposure or exposure to the Criminal Justice System, on child and adolescent mental health. In that context he recently coedited a book entitled, An International Perspective on Disasters and Children’s Mental Health (Springer, 2019). Throughout his medical career Dr. Amsel has worked at interface of psychiatry and physical medicine. As a hospital and emergency room psychiatrist for over thirty years he was responsible for the total health of patients under his care. This experience led him to work with the REACH Institute where he helped develop a training program for Primary Care Physicians (PCP) on how to integrate mental health into primary care practice. Dr. Amsel has continued to be actively involved in this training for more than a decade.

Dr. Mark L. Wolraich is the Shaun Walters Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics & Edith Kinney-Gaylord Presidential Professor at the University Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. He developed the Vanderbilt ADHD Behavior Rating Scales that are now used widely both nationally and internationally! He was inducted into the CHADD – Children & Adults with ADHD Hall of Fame and received awards from both the American Academy of Pediatrics & American Psychological Association Society of Pediatric Psychology. He’s authored 115 journal articles & 50 chapters. Fun Fact: During retirement, Dr Wolraich is hoping to learn to do clock repair.

He is a Former Director of the Doctoral Program in School Psychology at the University of Texas. He co-founded and acted as the Director of Psychology Services at the Texas Child Study Center. He is also the Former Director of Psychological Services at Dell Children’s Medical Center. Prior to REACH, she was an Asst Prof of Clinical Psychology & Psychiatry at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and Director of School-Based Mental Health Programs at the Center for the Advancement of Children’s Mental Health.
